The German justice system failed the Germans repeatedly. It failed to protect them from Hitler, it failed them when Hitler was in power and it failed them after the war when judges who served in nazi courts remained in post. Prosecuting Gröning did nothing to alleviate these failures. I would recommend everyone to watch the extensive documentary on or read je of several books about Der Auschwitz-Prozess in Frankfurt where Fritz Bauer (the one they made a movie about) was the Generalstaatsanwalt. I don’t say the prosecution of Oscar Gröning was wrong but SS Major Capesius, a well educated apothecary, was treated very lenient compared to SS Corporal Gröning an 18 year old who was raised and indoctrinated in the thirties. In my opinion, the prosecution was a necessar, a moral conviction was necessary but a punishment served no purpose. A German state who knew where Mengele lived, who employed Gehlen and his merry band of former nazis, who condemned in 1962 (!) a German civil servant for aiding and abetting a Jew lost the moral authority to imprison a man like Gröning.

Everyone talking about the concentration camps and Holocaust, but no one talks about what led the Germany people, most intelligent civilized brilliant people to act the way they did. As horrible as these acts were there was a reason behind it that no one care or dare to talk about it. This is not Just in Germany, through history Jews were expelled from every part of the world, but why? Germans were crazy? how about Russians? Romans? How about the rest of the world? The elderly woman who says there was no gasing in Auschwitz is standing with one foot in her grave and still doesn't want to know the truth about the atrocities done to Jews during the Holocaust. That's incredible. I do NOT say that Oskar Groning should be sent to prison, he's much too old for that. He should just take the responsibility for his deeds and apologize to the victims. He had the courage to take part in nazi crimes then. He should have the same courage to apologize now. God will soon be his judge.

I remember Eva Kor, she courageous plead for justice but also for forgiveness During the Oscar Groning trial she embraced him. Finally, a film about a Polish heroine. Irena Gut was Polish and the entire action takes place in Poland. If a film were made about Witlod Pilecki, a volunteer who went to Auschwitz to collect information about what was happening inside Auschwitz and then pass this information on to the Allies. There are many heroic heroes in Poland, but unfortunately few people know about it because it is the victors who write history
